What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is a pattern of actions and behaviors (physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, spiritual, and/or economic) used over time in intimate relationships to exert power and control. Domestic violence is a pervasive, life-threatening crime that affects millions of individuals regardless of age, economic status, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability, or education level.

Domestic Violence (DV) may also be called by other names, such as Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Teen Dating Violence (TDV), or Family Violence (FV).

It is important to know that domestic violence is a learned behavior and can be found in nearly every culture, society, and economic group in the world. DV is both universal and unique. Every relationship is different, so each survivor’s story is different.

For DV help, information and statistics, visit domesticshelters.org or National Network to End Domestic Violence.
